Yin Yang Collection by Vivienne Mackinder

Global Destination Education Headliner Presents New Editorial Work!

Vivienne Mackinder- who led a team of JOICO stylists from the U.S. and Canada in creating the hair looks for Malan Breton’s fashion show at NYFW S/S ’17 – is one of the headliners of JOICO’s Global Destination Education event which will take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in January 2018. This American hairstylist is no stranger to big stages nor the spotlight, having been a 7-time North American Hairstyling Award winner and Fashion Director for Intercoiffure Canada-America, and having worked with the likes of Katie Couric, Ricky Martin, and Vivienne Westwood, to name only a few.

Vivienne, along with famed hair and beauty photographer Roberto Ligresti and JOICO Colorist Gion Vincent, created a unique editorial collection, inspired by Chinese philosophy. The collection borrows from the idea of the Yin and the Yang (or the feminine and the masculine) to show how opposites – light and dark, fire and water, expansion and contraction – can actually complement each other.

A step-by-step guide of the looks in the collection:

Model #1 — Waterfall dipped in Peacock Green
Style: an inspired, edgy red-carpet look mixing a classic look with drama.
A ponytail is popular on the runway and red carpet, and as great as this classic is, I wanted to take the ponytail to the next level = the waterfall effect. The hair was prepared with Power Whip and blow dried smooth, and then dressed into a classic French Twist. A hair piece was then added to the model’s hair to cascade into a waterfall effect. The remaining front of the hair was smoothed and connected into the waterfall. Power Spray was used to finish the look.
Color: Natural Level 6
Root Application – equal parts Crème Lightener + 20 Vol. (process 45 mins.)
Glaze – equal parts Vero K-Pak Color Toner Pearl Blonde + 20 Vol. on damp hair for 7 mins.
Shampoo with K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo then use K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock for 5 mins, rinse.
Apply JOICO Color Intensity Peacock Green at the tips to create an overall dip-dyed look (process 20 mins.)

.

Model #2 — Patch work Quilt
Style Inspiration: 70’s Bohemian prints. The model’s hair was blow dried into a sleek high ponytail using JoiGel Medium Styling Gel. The hair was secured into a ballet bun. This was the base that I used to secure the hair extensions. I then attached the fringe and then added the “hair ball accessories.” For the final touch and finish, use JOICO Power Spray to lock the shape into place.
Color: Vero K-Pak Color 5RR + Color Intensity Orange + Vero K-Pak Color 8G + Vero K-Pak Color 4G (hand-painted rectangular sections on ‘weaved’ areas)

.

Model #3 — Confetti Pastel Delight
Style inspiration: the inspiration here was the Color Intensity Confetti collection. I wanted the hair to show movement. While the entire collection of images was inspired by the idea to create a new type of ponytail, I found my imagination taking off beyond the limitations of a ponytail. (If you look closely at each of the looks in the “Yang” part of this collection, you will see I have a ponytail base.) After Gion completed with coloring the weaved look (we used every color in the Color Intensity Confetti line in this hairpiece) I then styled and razor cut each weft. I made a base out of Milliner’s net and then started the construction. …Six hours later – voila! Pure magic.
Color: I used the Color Intensity Confetti Collection (Mint, Sky Blue, Lilac, Peach and Rose) + added pieces of Color Intensity: Titanium, Soft Pink, Mermaid Blue, Yellow and Light Purple

.

Model #4 — Red & Black Diva
Style: After hours of work turning a blonde hair piece into a banded red and black pattern – I was ready to design. I secured the model’s hair into a bun and then used her hair as a base to attach the hair piece. I then cut the fringe into a dramatic line. The final touch was taking the model’s own hair and creating a hair headband, which was the icing on the cake.Products used to style: JoiGel Medium Styling Gel to smooth the model’s hair into a ponytail. On the fringe and fall hair pieces, Power Spray hair spray for finishing and Hair Shake for texture.
Color: Color Red Fall and Fringe
The model was level 10 lightest blonde
step 1: Vero K-Pak Color 7RC (bright red copper) mixed with 20 volume roots to ends.
step 2: Vero K-Pak Chrome 2 parts RC8 (orange crush) with 1 part RR (really red) mixed with Vero K-Pak Chrome Activator – roots to ends
step 3: Color Intensity Red
step 4: zebra stripes with Vero K-Pak Color 1N (black)

.

Model #5 — Boho Casual (Look 1)
Style: The Hair was razor cut into a long shag with a very soft outline. The hair was blow dried in a “twist and stretch” method using Power Whip whipped foam and Hair Shake liquid-to-powder Texturizer, and Power Spray.

.

 Model #5 — All Tousled-Up (Look 2)
Style: The hair was styled using a backcombing set method. Teasing the roots and then using a curling iron to create the lift and texture. Power Spray was used at the base. The hair was then ruffled with the hands and blow dried to give it this relaxed undone style.
Color: Natural Level 4
Lowlights: create dimension by applying equal parts Vero K-Pak Chrome RB4 + Chrome Activator
Highlights: equal parts Vero K-Pak Permanent Color 9G + 20 Vol.
Glaze: Demi-Permanent Vero K-Pak Chrome G8 for 10 mins.
Use Color Infuse Brown Shampoo and Conditioner for after-care to maintain color vibrancy

.

Model #6 — The Sapphire Tonic
Style: Inspired by all the curls that are trending, I wanted to create a sexy undone ‘mop’ effect. The hair was razor cut into an asymmetric layered cut. After color, the hair was set with a small curling iron using a beach wave pattern incorporating Power Whip and layering Hair Shake for volume and separation; finishing with Power Spray for extra hold.
Color: Use Vero K-Pak Color 1N to create a deep root
Pre-lighten pieces (focusing on tips) and use Color Intensity Peacock Green + Sapphire Blue
Wash with K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner, rinse.

.

Model #7 — Deep Purple Rain
Style: inspired by David Bowie I wanted to created Boho Rock N’ Roll look. The hair was razor cut into a pixy cut at the front and working into a longer outline. The hair was then blow dried in a “twist and stretch” method and then curled in an abstract style. Products used for styling Power Whip and Hair Shake and Power Spray.
Color: Use Vero K-Pak Color 1N to create a deep root
Pre-lighten pieces all throughout the head
Use Color Intensity Orchid, Light Purple and Indigo to create this rich purple look
Wash with K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner, rinse.

.

Model #8 — Ardent Blonde
Style: Style the hair was set using Power Spray and using a flat iron waved into a lazy beach wave, then the top sections were teased and the hair was tied at the crown to create a soft and yet relaxed look.
Color: Natural Level 6
Root Application – equal parts Crème Lightener + 20 Vol. (process 45 mins.)
Glaze – equal parts Vero K-Pak Color Toner Pearl Blonde + 20 Vol. on damp hair for 7 mins.
